What fails a Connecticut emissions test, and what does not

Connecticut runs an emissions program on a rolling schedule. Most vehicles get tested every two years, and the notice arrives in the mail about a month before it is due. The test itself takes ten minutes. The part that takes longer is fixing whatever made you fail.

The single most common reason for a fail is the one nobody wants to hear: a lit check-engine light. The state network will not even run the test if the light is on. They send you home to fix it first. So if the light has been on for a month because you were hoping it would go away, that is the first thing to address.

Behind that light is usually an oxygen sensor, a mass airflow sensor, or an evaporative system leak. The oxygen sensor is the most common. It measures what is leaving the engine so the computer can trim fuel. A lazy sensor makes the car run rich and fail the tailpipe portion of the test even if the light is off.

An evap leak is the sneaky one. The system that captures fuel vapor has dozens of seals and a purge valve. A loose gas cap is enough to set a code. Tighten the cap until it clicks, drive a few days, and see if the light clears before you spend a dollar on diagnosis.

Tires and a cracked windshield will not fail emissions, but they will fail a safety inspection if one is required for your registration type. Read the notice. Emissions and safety are two different tests in Connecticut.

If you fail, you get a free retest within sixty days once the repair is done. Bring the car in, let us pull the code, fix the actual cause, and clear it.
